NSW Mineral Resource Areas
Mineral Resource Areas (MRAs) are areas where NSW local councils has been notified in accordance with Ministerial Direction 1.3 under Section 9.1(2) of the EP&A Act 1979. The direction requires councils to consult with DRNSW if proposed Local Environment Plans (LEPs including planning proposals and re-zonings) are likely to prohibit or restrict development of coal, petroleum, mineral and extractive resources. The direction requires the state government to notify local councils of the locations of current operations and resources of state or regional significance.
MRAs should also be used when undertaking the compatibility test required in accordance with Clause 13 of the Mining SEPP. The test must be carried out for any proposed development in the vicinity of existing mines, quarries and petroleum production facilities or resources of state or regional significance.

- Statement
- Identified Resource Areas Identified Resource Areas comprise significant operating or proposed mines or quarries and undeveloped defined resources. In the case of operating and proposed mines subject to mining titles, the mining lease or mining lease application boundaries are used to define the resource. Potential Resource Areas Potential Resource Areas comprise either deposits whose potential has not yet been fully assessed or areas that have high potential for the discovery of mineral resources based upon current knowledge. These areas have been defined using geological boundaries or where appropriate cadastral boundaries to facilitate definition of the ground. Transition Areas Transitions Areas (TAs) are areas adjacent to identified resource areas where proposed development may conflict with current or future mining or quarrying operations. TAs are indicative areas that maybe subject to significant impacts from mining or quarrying operations. TA widths are 1000m for operations where blasting is or would be used and 500m for sites where blasting is not required.
