NSW Geological Fossils

This fossil database contains information on samples mainly collected by the Geological Survey of NSW unless otherwise noted, with many specimens housed at the Londonderry Core Facility. To ensure the preservation of of key outcrops, only localities for microfossils and trace fossils are shown. For information on the locality of macrofossils and/or where specimens can be inspected, please email geoinfo.admin@industry.nsw.gov.au. geoinfo.admin@industry.nsw This fossil database contains information on samples mainly collected by the Geological Survey of NSW unless otherwise noted, with many specimens housed at the Londonderry Core Facility. Statement

The Geological Survey of New South Wales (GSNSW) fossil database was created in 2013 to provide a controlled and relational structure for records of fossil locations and specimen descriptions predominantly from NSW, with additional comparative material from elsewhere in Australia and overseas. These records include important historic palaeontological collections dating from 1882, including those from the original hand-written, leatherbound folio catalogue used from 1897. The database is fundamental in the ongoing curation of the Department's Palaeontological Reference Collection. It is also the repository for new fossil locations and descriptions of specimens collected by the GSNSW. The database replaces handwritten catalogues and card systems, and various digital files that were previously used to record fossil information. The database has been developed on a SQL Server platform using GeoBank software. Data can be entered or edited in GeoBank. New field locations are commonly captured in FieldObs, with specimen description and photographs typically added by department palaeontologists.
