NSW Isotope Geochemistry & Geochronology Samples

The isotope geochemistry database contains geochronology and geological process data managed by the Geological Survey of NSW (GSNSW). Isotopic systems / techniques are U/Pb, K/Ar, Ar/Ar, Rb/Sr, Pb/Pb, Re/Os, Sm/Nd, Lu/Hf and stable sulfur, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. The database stores location and sample collection information, lithological description, analytical and interpretation information for geological samples in New South Wales. The database includes links to stratigraphic unit, mineral occurrence and drill hole data. Some fields are controlled by look up tables.

Statement
A radiogenic isotope database was built in 2011 to provide a single point of truth for New South Wales. The database was developed from a collation of previous systems such as OZCHRON I (Geoscience Australia), COGENT I (GSNSW) and RAGING SPOT (Geoscience Australia), and previous compilations such as Jones (1987) (GSNSW, GS1986/237). The database was built in GBIS on a SQL Server (2008) platform. Compilation work was done in MS Excel prior to migration to GBIS in July 2011. In 2019 the database was restructured to better meet users’ needs and was expanded to include Pb-Pb and stable isotope datasets maintained by GSNSW staff in MS Excel. At this time the first Lu-Hf data was provided by Kathryn Waltenberg, Geoscience Australia. Most data in the current isotope geochemistry database is for samples collected by the GSNSW during regional mapping campaigns and other studies. However, data from published journal articles and other studies has been incorporated into the database since 2014. Data can be entered or edited in GBIS.
